MALKERNS – Vulamasango Primary and High School was a hive of activity on Friday as learners and teachers gathered to commemorate Culture Day, an event that placed identity, healing and hope at the centre of the school calendar.
The celebration, held at the school campus in Malkerns, drew participation from both primary and high school learners who turned out in colourful traditional attire. The event went beyond performances and dress, focusing on the role of culture in shaping behaviour, character and life choices among young people.

Organised by the school under His Majesty’s Correctional Services, Culture Day sought to reconnect learners with their roots at a time when many are navigating personal challenges and difficult circumstances. Teachers said the initiative forms part of the institution’s broader approach to holistic education, where academic growth is balanced with moral and social development.
Through storytelling sessions and traditional teachings, learners were encouraged to reflect on values such as respect, responsibility, discipline and unity. These principles, educators noted, are critical in guiding positive conduct and helping pupils rebuild confidence and self worth.

The programme featured traditional cuisine, poetry recitals, royal praises, music and dance. Cultural activities including umtsimba and kubutseka were also performed, giving learners an opportunity to experience and appreciate the richness of Eswatini heritage in a practical way.
The school environment, which brings together children from diverse backgrounds, used the occasion to promote inclusion and mutual understanding. By sharing traditions and customs, learners strengthened social bonds and gained a deeper appreciation of one another’s identities.

Preparations for the day required weeks of coordination among students, further building teamwork, communication and cooperation. Teachers linked the activities to classroom subjects such as history and language, allowing pupils to see the relevance of their studies in real life settings.
