Botha-Bothe, Lesotho – Basotho at risk of HIV now have access to a new, twice-yearly injectable prevention drug, lenacapavir.

The launch took place yesterday in Botha-Bothe, where U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Tobias Bradford joined Lesotho’s Minister of Health, Selibe Mochoboroane, to present the discreet and highly effective alternative to daily oral PrEP. The drug offers greater privacy and convenience, particularly for those at highest risk of HIV.

Lenacapavir was made available to Lesotho through support from the United States via the Global Fund. The U.S. government plans to provide thousands more doses in the coming months.

Bradford noted that the drug was developed by the American company Gilead Sciences, describing it as a product of U.S. educational and technological expertise, combined with strategic regulatory and economic support for scientific innovation.

“This makes an HIV-free future within reach,” he said.
