Catuane, Mozambique – The Administrative Post of Catuane in Matutuíne District is preparing for the construction of the Catuane Water Supply System, a development expected to deliver safe and reliable water to thousands of residents living near the borders of Mozambique, South Africa and Eswatini.
The project reaches implementation stage following extensive technical studies, coordination between institutions and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on 20 March between the Incomati and Maputo Watercourse Commission and the appointed contractor. Equipment is now being mobilised to the site as construction works prepare to commence.
The initiative falls under regional cooperation arrangements facilitated by the Incomati and Maputo Watercourse Commission, bringing together Mozambique, Eswatini and South Africa to address shared water security challenges. The tri border region has faced increasing pressure from climate variability, affecting groundwater levels and access to reliable supply. 
Officials involved in the process state that the project goes beyond infrastructure development. Community consultations were conducted with local leaders and residents to shape practical solutions suited to Catuane’s needs. Phase One of the Catuane Groundwater Project provided the technical groundwork, ensuring that implementation is guided by research and long term sustainability planning.
