Mbabane – The University of Eswatini (UNESWA) Arts and Culture Society will host its annual Africa Day celebration on Saturday, 30 May, at the Weather Station on the UNESWA campus, under the theme “Building the Africa (Eswatini) We Want.”
The event, billed as “An Age for the People, A Show for the Ages,” marks another year of the society’s cultural showcase, which has grown into one of the university’s most anticipated gatherings.
A string of notable guests and performers are lined up for the day, including Mr Stanley Dlamini, Chief Executive Officer of the Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture (ENCAC); Lethumusa Simelane from the National Archives; the Babukisi Foundation; Sanchiezy; Ms Bongiwe Hlatjwako, known as Indvuna yeMbali; Ms Thembekile Msibi; Mr Sabelo Tsabedze; Cy Ndukwemnyama; Hapkoo; Gcayi Umkhaphelwano; and Lodanda.
The programme will include music, African dance, drama, poetry, a culture troupe, and the Mr and Miss Cultural Heritage UNESWA pageant. All attendees are urged to come dressed in their traditional attire.
Entry costs E10 for students and E20 for non-students. Tickets are being sold at tuckshops across all UNESWA campuses. Refreshments will be available to all those holding a valid ticket after the event.
Vendors wishing to pitch stalls at the event can make contact on +268 7657 6034 or +268 7818 4486.
Among the returning performers is Sanchiezy, whose appearance at UNESWA a year ago launched him into the public eye.
“It’s been a year and few days since UNESWA trusted a known to none artist who was just debuting the music industry with a song titled Siyabonga Gogo. An energetic audience of UNESWA welcomed him with a loud noise and the whole of Sports Emporium stood up in amazement as they joined him in a song,” Sanchiezy said.
“With the videos of him they took and posted on that day, his life changed completely. With all that being said, I’ll never be bigger than UNESWA, than all those who support me day in, day out. Please pack the arena niyongibongisa kubo for all they have done for me. Halala,” he added.
The event is proudly sponsored by the Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture.
