Mbabane – The Royal Eswatini Police Service has condemned the use of green smoke by Nsingizini Hotspurs Football Club during celebrations at the Somhlolo National Stadium, saying the incident caused health complications for some spectators and constitutes gross criminal negligence.
The incident occurred on Sunday, 24 May 2026, when Nsingizini Hotspurs used the green smoke during their celebrations at the national stadium in Lobamba.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Acting Deputy Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Insp. Mazwi Ndzimandze said the police noted the matter with serious concern.
“As a law enforcement agency, we would like to condemn in the strongest possible terms the use of prohibited substances that compromise safety, health and security at stadiums and further assure the nation that necessary actions will be taken,” Ndzimandze said.
The police said the use of the substance is in contravention of the Public Order Act No. 12 of 2017, which aims to promote national security, public safety, public order and the protection of public health morals.
The club’s actions also run afoul of CAF Safety and Security Regulations 2019, which state that items that increase the risk of fire or are harmful to health, including fireworks, pyrotechnics, smoke bombs and lasers, are prohibited at football matches.
The regulations further require that everyone involved in football, from fans to officials and players, should be able to enjoy the game in a safe and secure environment.
Police said necessary action will be taken against those responsible.
