Durban – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) issued its concern surrounding the ongoing anti-illegal migrant protests in South Africa while meeting the KwaZulu-Natal provincial leadership.
Meeting with KZN Premier Thami Ntuli on the matter, the UNHCR stated that the wave of protests is straining relations as calls for the deportation of unauthorised foreign nationals grow.
The situation has forced immigrants in that country to seek refuge in government offices, with some camping at the Home Affairs offices over safety fears in their communities. Officials said they are attending to the issues of those camped outside their offices.
Ntuli encouraged the state to apply immigration rules that are consistent with the Constitution, protect human rights, and condemn immigrant abuse.
“We reject xenophobia and lawlessness; we reject hatred as well as disruption. What we desire is equilibrium. According to the eNCA, the premier envisions a society where there is coherence, accountability, and rights are accompanied by obligations.
