The Gauteng premier, Panyaza Lesufi, has called for a meeting on Sunday to discuss the country’s long-term reliance on immigration, as South Africans take to the streets to confirm the citizen-imposed deadline to evacuate on June 30.
On Tuesday, he gave an update to people on the provincial X account, stating that a meeting with the South African Police Service (SAPS) had taken place, during which the provincial administration was updated on their security readiness tactics for the statewide protests.
He stated unequivocally that violence would not be tolerated, stating, “Let me make it clear, we will not allow anyone to use the protests as an opportunity to take the law into their own hands. All criminal elements or acts of violence shall be met with the law.”
Lesufi urged citizens to be calm, obey the law, and allow law enforcement to do their jobs, saying, “We are committed to protecting everyone and all property in the province.”
The Gaunteng province government says it advocates communication first to address any disagreements and reach acceptable resolutions.
The Sunday meeting is designed to bring together stakeholders to develop long-term solutions to the immigrant issue.
