Dodoma – Tanzania’s Vice President, Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi, has announced his resignation from office and retirement from politics and public service.
Nchimbi made the announcement on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, in a public statement issued by the Office of the Vice President in Dodoma. He said he had written to President Samia Suluhu Hassan informing her of his decision to leave office on 4 September 2026.
The vice president cited Article 50(2)(c), read together with Article 149(2) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, as the legal basis for his resignation. 
Nchimbi said he had promised President Hassan on 27 August 2025 that he would support her and Tanzania to the best of his ability and serve with loyalty. He added that he had also assured her that he would vacate the position whenever she felt the need to appoint another vice president.
“I am fully satisfied, without any doubt, that Her Excellency the President desires change, and thus I have decided to fulfill my promise,” he said.
Nchimbi thanked President Hassan and the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi for trusting him with the position. He also expressed gratitude to Tanzanians for the support and cooperation they gave him during his time in public service.
He assured the public that he would continue serving as a responsible citizen of Tanzania.
Nchimbi’s announcement comes days after a Tanzanian newspaper was suspended over a report claiming that he had resisted calls to resign. Authorities said the publication had breached professional requirements relating to accuracy, balance, and verification.
