Simunye – Two Mozambican nationals aged 22 and 24 have been arrested and charged by Simunye Police after they were allegedly found in possession of a combined 34.4kg of dagga without a permit or licence.
The suspects were arrested on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at around 8.30pm at the Simunye Filling Station. Police said the dagga weighed 17.8kg and 16.6kg respectively.
The suspects are believed to have been transporting the dagga for smuggling into Mozambique.
According to information gathered, the two men had hitched a ride from Lonhlupheko to Simunye while carrying the suspected dagga.
They reportedly did not know that the man who offered them a lift in his private vehicle was a police officer attached to the Criminal Investigations Department.
The officer was travelling from Siteki to Ngomane Police Post when he allegedly noticed a strong smell of dagga coming from inside the vehicle.
Rather than confronting the suspects, the officer continued driving while discreetly communicating with police officers at Simunye.
Police officers subsequently waited for the vehicle at the Simunye Filling Station, where the two suspects were arrested.
They were taken to Simunye Police Station and spent the night in custody before appearing at the Siteki Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
The court remanded the two suspects back into custody until Tuesday, when they are expected to return for the continuation of the matter.
