JOHANNESBURG – South African radio station Kaya FM has suspended broadcaster Sol Phenduka with immediate effect, pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
The suspension was confirmed by the station’s spokesperson, Ian Bredenkamp, who said the process is still underway and no further details would be shared until it is concluded.
Phenduka, born Solomzi Thandubuntu Phenduka, co-hosts the breakfast show Siz the World with Sizwe Dhlomo, sportscaster Mpho Maboi and newsreader Mfundo Mabalane. His manager had not responded to media inquiries at the time of publishing.
The radio personality joined Kaya FM in 2022 after a stint in podcasting. He first rose to fame as a contestant on Big Brother but faced controversy in 2015 when he was suspended from 5FM for making offensive remarks about the Van Breda family murders in Stellenbosch.
At the time, Phenduka commented on the survival of 16-year-old Marli van Breda, referring to it as “fresh” because she could identify her attacker. He went on to describe her as “gorgeous” and said he would “like to axe her out,” remarks that 5FM later condemned as insensitive and inappropriate.
