Joburg lawyer assassinated in office

Avonwold, South Africa – Johannesburg was rocked on Friday morning when insolvency attorney Bouwer van Niekerk was assassinated inside his law firm’s offices in what investigators believe was a targeted hit linked to high-profile corruption cases.

Van Niekerk, a director at SmitSew Attorneys, was shot dead in the boardroom of his Avonwold Road offices after two men allegedly gained entry pretending to seek legal advice on a new case. According to private security company CAP, the assailants identified him, opened fire, and fled without stealing anything, pointing to a calculated assassination.

At the time of his death, Van Niekerk was handling a major insolvency dispute involving an alleged Ponzi scheme. He was also known for his role in the business rescue efforts of Gupta-owned companies, which placed him at the centre of complex and politically sensitive litigation.

A senior Johannesburg lawyer told News24 that the killing was designed to send “a very hard message” to those in the insolvency and business rescue sector. “They could have staged a hijacking or used other means, but they chose to shoot him in his boardroom. It sends a chilling signal,” he said.

The South African Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners Association (SARIPA) said it would engage law enforcement authorities to ensure the perpetrators are arrested. Its chairperson, Jo-Anne Mitchell Marais, questioned why the murders of Cloete and Thomas Murray, who were also targeted in 2023, remain unsolved.

By early afternoon, Johannesburg police had cordoned off Van Niekerk’s offices with yellow tape as heavily armed guards stood at the entrances. Crime scene investigators photographed the exterior while a pathology vehicle removed the body shortly after 13:30.

Ian Cameron, chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police in South Africa’s Parliament and a prominent crime activist, said the killing was a grim reminder of the dangers faced by those who expose corruption and organised crime.

“The murder of insolvency lawyer Bouwer van Niekerk is a chilling reminder of the risks faced by those who challenge corruption and organised crime,” Cameron said. “Van Niekerk himself warned that the assassinations of Cloete and Thomas Murray had sent a terrifying message to the legal profession. His own killing now deepens the fear that those who hold powerful networks accountable are being systematically targeted.”

He recalled that Cloete Murray, one of South Africa’s leading insolvency practitioners, was assassinated in 2023 alongside his son Thomas in Pretoria. Despite the gravity of that case, no arrests have been made. “When the legal community is under fire, justice itself is under fire,” Cameron added, urging the Hawks and the police to act decisively.
