Mankayane Hospital reopens after fire disruption

Mankayane Government Hospital is set to reopen tomorrow after operations were halted when a fire swept through part of the facility on Sunday night. The incident affected the Male Surgical Ward and a section of the Female Ward, forcing health workers to evacuate all admitted patients and transfer them to surrounding health facilities.

The Ministry of Health confirmed yesterday that an assessment of the damage revealed concerns around the hospital’s electrical system. Specialists from the Eswatini Electricity Company advised that power should remain off until corrective measures were completed to prevent faults and further risk. A contractor was immediately brought in to stabilise the affected systems.

A follow up inspection by EEC officials this morning cleared the hospital for reconnection, allowing electricity to be restored. The Ministry announced that the hospital will be fully operational again from tomorrow, 10 December.

Patients who were temporarily accommodated in other facilities are expected to return to Mankayane on the same day. Two wards previously used as isolation spaces will now take over from the damaged wards. These sections were inspected by EEC and Eswatini Fire and Emergency Services officers, who confirmed they are safe for both staff and patients.

The Ministry expressed gratitude to neighbouring health facilities that took in patients, the emergency response teams that provided swift transport, and the health workers together with community members who rushed to rescue patients during the fire.

Communications Officer Nsindiso Tsabedze assured staff and clients that the hospital is ready to operate safely once again.
