MASERU — The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition has moved to strengthen national defences against Foot and Mouth Disease by establishing a Multi-Sectoral Task Team. The meeting, held on December 15 at the Ministry’s offices in Maseru, brought together government officials and key stakeholders to discuss prevention and preparedness measures.
Minister of Food Security and Nutrition Honourable Thabo Mofosi opened the session, explaining that the task team will coordinate efforts to protect Lesotho’s livestock and rural livelihoods from the highly contagious disease.
Principal Secretary Dr Khothatso Tsooana said the meeting aimed to reinforce government strategies to prevent outbreaks and improve regional disease monitoring. He described FMD as a transboundary threat to cattle, sheep and goats, noting that Lesotho’s location and livestock movements increase the country’s vulnerability.
Director General Dr Relebohile Lepheana provided an update on the disease, stressing that while Lesotho has maintained its Foot and Mouth Disease–free status, the country remains at risk due to dependence on South Africa. She warned that an outbreak could threaten access to wool and mohair markets and result in high costs from control measures, vaccination, quarantine and restricted livestock movements.
Dr Lepheana urged Basotho to follow import regulations for susceptible animals, conduct rapid livestock assessments, establish protection zones, and ensure contingency plans are in place. The Ministry pledged continued enforcement of animal movement controls and adherence to animal health standards. Cabinet approval of the task team is required before it becomes operational.
