Real Madrid defeated Manchester City 2 to 1 on Tuesday night at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England, sealing a 5 to 1 aggregate victory to reach the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League.
The Spanish giants, led by manager Álvaro Arbeloa, progressed after a commanding first leg performance that had already put them in control of the Round of 16 tie. Their advantage became even stronger during the second leg when Manchester City were reduced to 10 players early in the match.
The decisive moment arrived in the 20th minute when Bernardo Silva handled the ball on the goal line while trying to stop a shot from Vinícius Júnior. Referee Clément Turpin awarded a penalty and issued a red card to the Portuguese midfielder after a video assistant referee review.
Vinícius Júnior stepped up and calmly converted the spot kick in the 22nd minute, sending goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way and extending Real Madrid’s aggregate lead to four goals.
Manchester City, coached by Pep Guardiola, continued to press despite the numerical disadvantage. The English side found an equaliser on the night in the 41st minute when Erling Haaland finished from close range after a quick attacking move created by winger Jérémy Doku.
The hosts tried to build momentum in the second half, creating several chances even with ten men. Substitute goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who replaced Thibaut Courtois at halftime due to a right adductor injury, produced an early save to deny Haaland.
City thought they had taken the lead at various moments, but offside decisions ruled out efforts from Jérémy Doku and Aït Nouri as frustration grew among the home supporters.
Real Madrid regained control as the match entered its final stages. Vinícius Júnior appeared to score in stoppage time, only for the goal to be disallowed after a VAR review confirmed he had been offside.
The Brazilian forward eventually secured the victory moments later. In the fourth minute of added time, Aurélien Tchouaméni delivered a precise cross into the box, allowing Vinícius Júnior to finish calmly and seal a 2 to 1 win on the night.
The result confirmed Real Madrid’s place in the Champions League quarter finals for the 13th time in the past 15 seasons. The Spanish club have reached the semi finals 12 times during that period and lifted the trophy six times.
Manchester City exit the competition before the last eight for the second consecutive season, while Real Madrid are expected to face Bayern Munich in the next round.
