YAOUNDÉ, CAMEROON – The Kingdom of Eswatini has renewed its call for stronger support for Landlocked Developing Countries during the 14th World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference currently under way in Yaoundé.
Speaking on behalf of Honourable Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo, Under Secretary Mr Phesheya Dube told delegates that Eswatini remains committed to advancing the interests of LLDCs within the multilateral trading system.
He conveyed appreciation to the Government of Cameroon for hosting the global gathering, while drawing attention to the structural barriers that continue to affect landlocked economies such as Eswatini. Among the concerns raised were high trade costs and limited competitiveness linked to the absence of direct access to the sea.
Trade facilitation was identified as a pressing priority for the country. Mr Dube called for the full implementation of the Trade Facilitation Agreement, improved transit systems and sustained investment in trade related infrastructure as measures that can support long term economic growth.
Eswatini also called for renewed trust in the World Trade Organization as an institution central to economic development and poverty reduction. The country urged members to work towards a transparent, predictable and inclusive multilateral trading system at a time when global trade faces uncertainty.
Addressing fellow ministers and delegates, Mr Dube said, “LLDCs must speak with one voice. Unity is essential to ensure that our unique challenges are addressed and that longstanding commitments are fulfilled.”
He added that Eswatini continues to push for a dedicated work programme aimed at reducing transit costs, improving efficiency and unlocking trade potential for all Landlocked Developing Countries.
