MASERU, LESOTHO – The Ramela Foundation has unveiled plans for the 2026 Moshoeshoe’s Day Horse Race, with over M2.5 million committed towards this year’s event scheduled for April 18 at Peka.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during a press conference addressed by the foundation’s founder, Bishop Thakadu Ramela, who outlined the vision behind the annual race and its growing financial backing.
Bishop Ramela said the initiative seeks to create employment opportunities for Basotho while promoting tourism and stimulating economic growth in Lesotho. He revealed that sponsorship has risen significantly from M500,000 last year to more than M2.5 million for the upcoming edition.
He appealed to businesses and partners to come on board to help expand and sustain the event, stating that the foundation remains committed to giving back to the nation through impactful community initiatives.
The President of the Equestrian Association of Lesotho, Mr Elliot Lehora, welcomed the continued support for horse racing. He noted that last year’s race attracted 15 horses from neighbouring South Africa, reflecting the event’s regional appeal.
Mr Lehora also pointed to growing female participation in the sport. Three women from Maseru and two from Matsoku competed in the previous race, a development he described as a significant milestone for inclusivity in equestrian sport.
Adding government backing to the initiative, the Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, Honourable Motlatsi Maqelepo, said the Moshoeshoe’s Day Horse Race has the potential to strengthen Lesotho’s tourism sector while showcasing Basotho culture to an international audience.
He said the event must also bring tangible benefits to the host community of Peka. This year marks the second time the Ramela Foundation is hosting the race, which celebrates the resilience of the Basotho nation and recognises the horse as a long standing symbol of pride and cultural identity.
The minister thanked Bishop Ramela for his contribution and called on the private sector and other stakeholders to support the initiative, citing its potential to contribute meaningfully to national development. Through the Moshoeshoe’s Day Horse Race, the foundation aims to inspire communities, particularly young people, while advancing cultural preservation and economic activity.
