Ressano Garcia – Mozambique’s Minister of Transport and Logistics João Matlombe and his South African counterpart Barbara Creecy have met at the Ressano Garcia border post, which connects to Lebombo on the South African side, to review progress on the implementation of a one-stop border post at the crossing.

The visit showed notable improvements since a previous inspection carried out in December 2025, when congestion along National Road No. 4 stretched up to 20 kilometres. That problem has since been resolved, with trucks now taking no more than two hours to be processed. During the week, the average waiting time has been between 20 and 30 minutes.

Creecy recalled what Matlombe had told her during an earlier meeting. “Minister Matlombe told me when we met in Mozambique in November that often trucks took three days to cross this border, which represented a huge risk for transport efficiency,” she said.

Matlombe said the two governments had agreed to consolidate the transitional measures that had been put in place to end the truck congestion on the N4. “Fortunately, on the South African side, the Minister is leading a process of transformation of the logistics corridor that will facilitate integration with the efforts we are making on our side, so that the corridor can develop our economies,” he said.

The Ressano Garcia and Lebombo border post is a key crossing point for trade and transport in the region, and its efficiency directly affects the movement of goods through Southern Africa, including supply chains that touch the Kingdom of Eswatini.

Matlombe called on all working teams to remain committed during the current transitional phase. “We have to make a little more sacrifice, but in the short term we will overcome it, in order to have a more definitive solution that will allow us to work under less pressure,” he said.

He added that the governments remained firmly on course to deliver the project. “Despite being in a transitional phase, we are committed to ensuring that all these projects are completed soon and implemented in line with our expectations,” he said.
