Maseru – Lesotho has taken a significant step toward building its first utility-scale wind farm, with Hirundo Energy and the Lesotho Electricity Company signing a Memorandum of Understanding and handing it over to the country’s new Minister of Energy and Mining, Lejone Mpotjoane, at the LEAD 2026 Conference.

The MOU formalises a shared commitment between Hirundo Energy and the Lesotho Electricity Company to finalise the Power Purchase Agreement process for the Mohale’s Hoek Wind Farm, following extensive engagement between the two parties.

The signing took place under the conference theme of moving from commitment to action and was described by Hirundo Energy as an important milestone in bringing the wind farm project closer to reality.

The development is part of Lesotho’s broader push to diversify its energy sector and strengthen energy security through expanded renewable energy generation. The company said partnerships between public and private sector actors remained essential to achieving those goals.

Hirundo Energy extended appreciation to GIZ South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini, as well as the European Union in Lesotho, for their coordination, support and continued commitment to advancing Lesotho’s renewable energy ambitions.

The LEAD 2026 Conference provided a platform to review progress, strengthen partnerships and map out the work still ahead in Lesotho’s renewable energy transition.
