Toronto – The Ivory Coast took a heavy hit from four-time FIFA World Cup champions, Germany, in Toronto as they won the match 2-1 in extra time.
Côte d’Ivoire took an early lead and were out to make history when captain Franck Kessie, the Al-Ahli midfielder, scored in the first half.
Though with two disallowed goals, Germany came from behind, equalising at 68 minutes and then closing the match at 90+4 minutes, a crucial match for the Group E contenders.
Aleksandar Pavlovic headed home, but his goal was ruled out for a foul on Yahia Fofana, the Ivory Coast goalkeeper. Again at 39 minutes, Wirtz fouled Kossounou on the edge of the box as he desperately tried to score.
By the end of the first half, the formidable Germans had 53% possession control but were still goalless.
The seven minutes added for halt time break seemed either too much for the Ivory Coast or too little for Germany, depending on who you were backing. But it wasn’t after the second half opened that either side would fight for a crucial goal.
Germany’s Brown found a hole in the box, and he fired a low shot, but the goalie made the vital save.
During the cooling off phase, Ivory Coast replaced Bonny, Diallo, and Sangare with Evann Guessand, Simon Adingra, and Seko Fofana.
At 68 minutes, Germany equalised. Deniz Undav got a cross to the post after Amiri swung it, sending Toronto Stadium into cheers with his first goal.
He scored his second goal, propelling Germany to the top of the group before the match concluded, which was bad news for Ivory Coast, who fought all out to thwart Germany’s victory.
