Condolences are pouring in following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams.
Adams was found dead on the morning of Saturday, 11 July. The cause of death was yet unknown. He died at the age of 25.
“Today, South African football mourns the loss of a talented player whose passion, dedication, and love for the beautiful game inspired many,” Bafana Bafana wrote on their X account. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, loved ones, teammates, and everyone affected by this devastating loss. May his soul rest in eternal peace. You will never be forgotten, Jayden.” 
Adams featured in the national team squad just weeks ago in the ongoing FIFA World Cup, where South Africa made it to the knockout stage before it was defeated 1-0 by Canada.
The footballer’s death was announced by the South African Minister for Sport, Gayton McKenzie. He expressed his condolences in a statement: “It is with deep shock and great sadness that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams. South African football has lost one of its most promising young talents.”
Adams began his football career at Stellenbosch FC, the first graduate to sign a professional contract in 2020, working up through teams before joining Mamelodi Sundowns last January.
He was part of the Bafana Bafana squad that won bronze in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2024. In the current FIFA World Cup he has had three appearances.
Meanwhile, MacKenzie also mourned the passing of former rugby U18 prop Luqobo ‘Bibo’ Makwedini who was also reported deceased at the age of 20. He had recently returned to France where he played for AS Beziers Herault.
