Mbabane – Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo has told cooperators from across the country that Government remains committed to strengthening the cooperative movement as a vehicle for economic empowerment, financial inclusion and sustainable community development.
The Minister was speaking at the commemoration of International Cooperative Day 2026, marked globally under the theme “Cooperatives for a Peaceful World.” The event drew cooperative members from various parts of the Kingdom of Eswatini.
Khumalo commended cooperatives for creating opportunities in agriculture, finance, youth entrepreneurship and rural development, saying their work has improved the lives of thousands of Emaswati. 
He called on cooperatives to uphold the highest standards of governance, transparency and accountability. Strong governance, he said, is essential for protecting the investments of members and ensuring the long term sustainability of the sector.
A major talking point at the celebration was an update on the proposed Cooperative Bank of Eswatini. The initiative is expected to strengthen the sector through improved financial services, digital transformation, capacity building and expanded access to development finance.
The Minister further announced the upcoming launch of the Cooperative Voice Podcast, a new platform that will educate Emaswati and connect them with the opportunities, values and impact of the cooperative movement.
International Cooperative Day is observed annually to recognise the contribution of cooperatives to social and economic development.
