BRIGHTON, England – Danny Welbeck rolled back the years on Saturday afternoon to inflict a painful 2-1 defeat on a struggling Liverpool side at the American Express Stadium. The veteran striker scored in each half to ensure the Seagulls climbed to eighth in the Premier League standings, leaving the Reds searching for answers after another second half collapse.
The match started with immediate drama for Arne Slot’s side when Hugo Ekitike was forced off after only eight minutes. The Frenchman appeared to suffer a dead leg following a heavy challenge from former Liverpool star James Milner. Curtis Jones was introduced as an early substitute, forcing a tactical reshuffle that saw Florian Wirtz move into a forward role.
Despite the early disruption, the visitors controlled the opening exchanges until Brighton struck against the run of play in the 14th minute. A poor pass from goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili gifted Brighton a throw in, which eventually found its way to Diego Gomez. He lofted a ball toward the back post where Welbeck was waiting to head home his 11th goal of the season.
Liverpool responded well to the setback and leveled the score in the 30th minute. Milos Kerkez showed great anticipation to intercept a headed back pass from Lewis Dunk intended for Bart Verbruggen. The Hungarian fullback nipped in to finish over the goalkeeper, marking his first goal on the south coast.
The second half proved to be a different story as Brighton took control. In the 56th minute, Yankuba Minteh delivered a precise cross that Jack Hinshelwood squared for Welbeck. The striker made no mistake from close range to restore the lead. A lengthy VAR review for offside eventually confirmed the goal, sending the home fans into raptures.
Pundit Danny Murphy was critical of the visitors’ defensive display during the broadcast.
“Woeful second half, again, after Spurs. A lack of cohesion, very little chances created, poor mistakes at the back, a lack of concentration. At one point you’ve got two central midfielders playing in the back four, a system the lads aren’t sure on. It’s all over the place,” Murphy said.
He further noted that watching the team has become desperate at times because there is no real pattern to their play despite the effort shown on the pitch.
As the game reached its final stages, Brighton missed several opportunities to extend their lead. Kaoru Mitoma beat Curtis Jones with ease before setting up Hinshelwood, who somehow missed an open net. Liverpool’s frustrations grew as Dominik Szoboszlai and Federico Chiesa both received yellow cards in a feisty conclusion to the match.
Brighton captain Lewis Dunk also saw yellow for delaying a restart, which means he will now miss upcoming matches against Burnley and Spurs. Despite a late flurry of corners for the Reds, Verbruggen remained solid in the Brighton goal to secure the three points.
Former player Matt Holland praised the match winner for his clinical performance.
“Outstanding today, Danny Welbeck. His two goals look like they are earning Brighton all three points. He’ll no doubt be claiming the man of the match award,” Holland noted.
The defeat marks Liverpool’s tenth of the campaign and leaves them trailing in the race for Champions League qualification. For the local fans in Eswatini following the English top flight, the result serves as a reminder of how much the Reds are missing the presence of Alisson and Mohamed Salah, who both sat out due to injury.
