Pretoria – South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) has renewed its commitment to keeping children safe at the country’s ports of entry, as the nation marks Child Protection Month this May.

Child Protection Month is observed every year to raise awareness about children’s rights and the urgent need to protect them from abuse, exploitation and neglect. During this period, government departments, child protection agencies and civil society organisations intensify their collaborative efforts to promote the wellbeing of children and address social challenges affecting young people.

The BMA said the movement of minors remains a critical area of focus at ports of entry, with the authority playing a central role in monitoring and regulating cross-border travel involving children. This includes ensuring that all legal requirements are met to prevent trafficking, abduction and other forms of harm.

The authority’s efforts form part of a broader national initiative aimed at mobilising all sectors of society to protect children. Parents, guardians and communities have been urged to stay alert and informed about the regulations that govern the travel of minors, particularly when crossing international borders.

By strengthening oversight and working closely with other stakeholders, the BMA says it aims to contribute to a safer environment for children, reinforcing the message that their protection is a shared responsibility.

Various awareness campaigns and interventions are planned across South Africa throughout the month.
