Gaborone – Senior officials from Botswana and South Africa gathered in Gaborone on Saturday, 17 May 2026, to open the 6th Session of the Botswana-South Africa Bi-National Commission, with talks expected to run until 19 May 2026.

The Senior Officials Meeting serves as a platform for both countries to assess progress made since the 5th BNC Session held in Pretoria in April 2022, discuss matters of shared interest, and identify new areas where the two neighbours can deepen their cooperation.

Areas on the table include trade and investment, energy, agriculture, tourism, youth and sport, culture, mining, defence and security, immigration, environmental conservation and management, transport, and information and communication technologies.

The Botswana-South Africa BNC is a Summit-level bilateral mechanism that was established under an agreement signed in August 2012, with the goal of strengthening cooperation for the benefit of the people of both countries.

The Senior Officials Meeting is the first of three tiers of engagement planned for this session. It will be followed by a Ministerial Meeting and then a Heads of State Summit, both scheduled to take place from 20 to 21 May 2026.
