Manzini – Manzini police have arrested and charged a 22-year-old man from Moneni after he robbed a shopkeeper of E35 000 in Manzini City Centre on Wednesday evening, only to be shot in the leg while trying to flee.
The suspect allegedly targeted a shop at closing time, at around 18:00, when the 29-year-old victim from Liqhaga Flats and his colleagues had finished their day’s work. The victim was carrying a bag containing the cash when the suspect approached him, grabbed the bag and ran.
Members of the public gave chase and the suspect was shot once in the left leg as he tried to evade a citizen’s arrest. He was then handed over to police and rushed to hospital, where he is currently admitted receiving medical attention. The money was fully recovered. 
Police have opened an inquest into the shooting. Preliminary investigations suggest the firearm used was a licenced pistol.
