Abuja – Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, describing him as a personal friend and trusted ally.

Modi crossed the milestone on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, completing 4,399 consecutive days in office since first taking the oath on May 26, 2014. This surpasses the record previously held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who served 4,398 days as an elected leader.

In a statement issued from the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, June 9, Tinubu said the achievement reflected the confidence and trust that the people of India had placed in Modi’s leadership across three consecutive electoral mandates.

“Beyond being a great friend of Nigeria, Prime Minister Modi is a personal friend and trusted ally whom I can always count on. Over the years, I have come to deeply admire his wisdom, courage, and commitment to the progress and prosperity of his nation,” Tinubu said.

The Nigerian president noted that Modi, who holds the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Nigeria’s national honour, had contributed to strengthening ties between the two countries.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, I wish Prime Minister Modi continued good health, wisdom, and success as he leads India to even greater heights,” Tinubu added.

Modi has led India through three consecutive Lok Sabha mandates since first assuming office in 2014, becoming the central figure in one of the most dominant political eras since the country’s independence.

During his tenure, nearly 250 million Indians moved out of multidimensional poverty, while India strengthened its position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy.
