Lusaka – Zambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has held a strategic meeting with MTN Mobile Money Limited Zambia to explore ways of strengthening digital financial services for Zambians living abroad.
The meeting took place on 9 June 2026 and was led by Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation, who sat down with MTN officials including Chief Product Officer Chikondi F. Mwanza and Remmingtone T. Milambo, Manager for Remittance and Interoperability.
MTN officials gave an overview of the company’s existing services that allow Zambians in the diaspora to send and receive money across borders, and also outlined the recent launch of outbound remittance capabilities to Europe. The new service is seen as having the potential to improve the accessibility and affordability of cross-border transactions for Zambians living on the continent. 
Discussions covered opportunities for collaboration to expand access to financial services for the diaspora, as well as the policy support and regulatory framework needed to create an enabling environment for such services to thrive.
The meeting also looked at potential joint programmes to increase awareness around cross-border digital financial services and support government-led financial literacy initiatives aimed at helping diaspora communities make better use of digital financial platforms.
Gundersen commended MTN for its work in advancing financial inclusion and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that address the needs of Zambians abroad. She noted that such collaborations are critical to enhancing access to secure and affordable financial services, in line with the government’s broader policy objective of enhancing the diaspora’s contribution to national development.
