Malkens – House On Fire has revealed the culinary and fashion themes for the 8th edition of the Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival, set to take place on 1 and 2 August 2026 in Malkerns.
Organisers say this year’s overarching theme, “A Return to the African Future,” will run through both the food and fashion programming, which they describe as a call to reconnect with African heritage and traditions while looking ahead to a future shaped by African innovation.

The festival’s culinary programme will centre on what organisers are calling Nguni Foodways, described as a living culinary landscape built around the people, places, practices and flavours linking Nguni communities across Southern Africa. Organisers say the theme stretches beyond cuisine, offering a way to trace the development of society itself, from hunter gatherer traditions and nomadic pastoralism through to the food cultures of today.

According to the festival, Nguni food traditions found in Eswatini, South Africa, Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries have been shaped over centuries by migration, trade and exchange with surrounding communities, while remaining anchored in indigenous knowledge systems. Techniques such as fermentation, drying, smoking and slow cooking over wood fires are presented as evidence of generations of accumulated food knowledge.

Organisers say these traditional methods are now feeding into the work of a new generation of chefs, farmers, brewers and artisans who are reinterpreting old techniques through a contemporary lens.
The 2026 programme will include food demonstrations, botanical workshops, Nguni fine dining showcases and what organisers describe as immersive food environments across the festival grounds. Livestock demonstrations will look at the cultural and economic value of indigenous breeds, while brewing masterclasses and sommelier led tastings will focus on fermentation.

The festival’s Farm to Fork Cook Off will also return, pairing chefs with producers to create dishes built around indigenous ingredients and regenerative farming methods.
A Food Indaba will bring together chefs, academics, farmers, food entrepreneurs and cultural custodians for discussions around what organisers term a contemporary Ancestral Table, examining how indigenous food knowledge can shape future food systems and culinary identity. Capacity building workshops for chefs, food vendors and hospitality workers are also planned as part of the festival’s broader skills development push.

On the fashion side, the 2026 theme is Kwasukasukela, the siSwati phrase for “Once Upon a Time,” traditionally used to open folktales told around the fire. Organisers say the theme is meant to draw on African storytelling traditions, with style inspiration pulled from historical figures, animals, landscapes and lessons passed down orally through generations.
Festivalgoers are being encouraged to build outfits around two looks over the two days, drawing on personal stories and cultural narratives expressed through traditional motifs, proverbs and characters from African oral history. The festival’s guidance points to woven textures, symbolic patterns, natural materials and reinterpreted folk imagery as style cues.

The Luju Fashion Show will once again take place on the Luju Runway Stage, featuring a headline designer alongside a mix of local and regional designers. The Luju Fashion Program will continue supporting Eswatini designers as they build collections for the runway, with the festival providing mentorship, technical support and trade linkages, along with media coverage.
A Fashion Indaba will also be held, bringing together designers, stylists, retailers and fabric producers to discuss the state of Eswatini’s fashion industry and the challenges around building a more sustainable production and consumption value chain locally.
