MAPUTO, Mozambique – The European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM MOZ) marked its second anniversary on Monday, 1 September 2026, continuing a security and defence partnership between the EU and Mozambique that began five years ago with the European Union Training Mission in Mozambique (EUTM MOZ).
Since its mandate began, EUMAM MOZ has delivered more than 70 programmes involving nearly 2,000 Mozambican military personnel. The training has covered leadership, logistics, legal and gender advisory support, civil-military cooperation, military health and engineering, counterterrorism and communications, alongside mentoring and advisory activities tailored to the specific needs of the Mozambican Armed Defence Forces (FADM) at different command levels.
Over the past year, the mission concentrated on supporting the FADM through the various phases of the Quick Reaction Forces (QRFs) operational cycle, covering preparation, employment and regeneration, with particular focus on forces operating in the conflict-hit northern province of Cabo Delgado. Through specialised training and advisory support, procedures and practices have been reinforced across different levels of command, contributing to the operational readiness of the FADM on the ground. 
The work carried out by EUMAM MOZ has strengthened the FADM’s national capabilities and improved the autonomy of the QRFs in executing their responsibilities throughout their operational cycle. All activities are conducted in line with International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law.
As the mission enters its third year, EUMAM MOZ says it will continue working in close coordination with Mozambican authorities to preserve gains already made, build on developed capabilities and sustain the EU-Mozambique defence partnership going forward.
