Modi visits Ethiopia for talks with Abiy Ahmed

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, today for a two-day visit aimed at strengthening India-Ethiopia ties. This marks Mr Modi’s first visit to Ethiopia, where he is set to meet Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali and address a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament.

The capital has been decorated with numerous hoardings, welcome posters, and Indian flags in anticipation of the first Indian Prime Ministerial visit since 2011. The Indian diaspora in Ethiopia, numbering around 2 thousand, is preparing a special outreach programme, including recitation of songs and poems, to welcome Mr Modi.

The visit will see discussions covering agriculture, mining, digital public infrastructure, the International Solar Alliance, and cybersecurity, highlighting Ethiopia’s role as a key partner for India in the Global South.

Mr Modi shared updates on his arrival and engagements on social media. He wrote from Addis Ababa airport:

“Landed in Addis Ababa a short while ago. Honoured by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali’s gesture of welcoming me at the airport. Ethiopia is a nation with great history and vibrant culture. India and Ethiopia share deep civilisational ties. I look forward to engaging with the Ethiopian leadership to further strengthen our partnership in diverse areas.”

He also tweeted about participating in a traditional coffee ceremony with the Ethiopian leader:

“At Addis Ababa airport, took part in a traditional Coffee Ceremony with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. The ceremony beautifully highlights Ethiopia’s rich heritage.”

Afterwards, Mr Modi visited the Science Museum in the city, noting:

“After welcoming me at Addis Ababa airport, Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali drove me to the Science Museum in the city. This Museum showcases different aspects of science and innovation and how they can be harnessed for Ethiopia’s progress.”
