EZULWINI – The Eswatini Environment Authority participated in the Ezulwini Annual Waste Forum 2026 on March 20 at Happy Valley, hosted by the Ezulwini Municipality, as part of activities marking International Zero Waste Day under the theme “Food Waste.”
During the forum, the Authority joined a panel discussion addressing how municipalities can strengthen regulatory frameworks for waste management, align local programmes with national environmental regulations, and collaborate with regulators to promote circular waste management.
Food waste continues to pose both environmental and socio-economic challenges. Globally, nearly one-third of all food produced is lost or wasted, amounting to about 1.3 billion tonnes annually. In Sub-Saharan Africa, around 230 million tonnes of food is wasted each year, even as many communities face food insecurity. 
The EEA said reducing food waste can improve food security, conserve natural resources, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance community resilience.
The Authority continues to focus on strengthening policies and regulations, promoting sustainable waste practices, encouraging circular economy solutions like composting and food recovery, and supporting communities in implementing practical waste reduction strategies.
