Cape Town – Chinese-owned British carmaker MG is pushing further into the South African market in 2026, confirming it will enter two new segments with three new products, including additional new energy vehicle variants.

The announcement comes after MG re-established itself in South Africa at the start of last year, building its local portfolio around the MG3 hatchback, the ZS and ZS Pro compact SUVs, the HS mid-sized SUV and the all-electric Cyberster sports car.

For Swazi car buyers who regularly shop across the border, the expanded MG lineup will bring more options at varying price points in the South African market, which often influences vehicle availability and pricing in the Kingdom.

The ZS, MG’s current volume seller starting at R300,000, is on its way out. The carmaker confirmed the compact SUV’s local lifespan is coming to an end and it is expected to be discontinued before the end of the year. The ZS Pro, which starts at R397,600, will take over as the more accessible option in the compact SUV range, with a more affordable derivative expected following the ZS’s exit. The ZS Pro is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine producing 125kW and 275Nm of torque and carries a seven-year/200,000km warranty. A self-charging hybrid version combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a battery pack and electric motor for a combined output of 145kW is also likely to join the local lineup this year.

The HS mid-sized SUV, starting just under R500,000, offers a larger alternative and is available in two derivatives: a 1.5-litre turbo producing 125kW and 275Nm, and a 2.0-litre turbo delivering 170kW and 370Nm. A hybrid electric variant featuring a 1.5-litre engine paired with an electric motor and battery pack producing a combined 165kW could also be added to the range.

The MG3 hatchback has been a standout performer since its launch, with MG describing its entry into the competitive B-segment as a brave move that has paid off. Last month the MG3 outsold both the ZS Pro and the HS. The entry-level MG3 1.5 Comfort starts at R269,900 and is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine making 81kW and 142Nm. The flagship MG3 Hybrid+ Luxury is a self-charging hybrid combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a battery pack and electric motor for a system total of 155kW.

At the top of the range sits the Cyberster, the world’s first all-electric two-seater soft-top sports car. Priced at R1.4 million, it is powered by two electric motors producing a combined 375kW and 725Nm of torque. During a test last year, it sprinted from 0 to 100km/h in 3.57 seconds.
