Two arrested over Hluthi Christmas night killing

Hluthi police have arrested and charged two young men following the murder of a 43 year old man from Ngoleni, an incident that unfolded on Christmas night in the southern part of the Kingdom.

According to a report from the Royal Eswatini Police Service, the suspects aged 23 and 22, from Moihoek and Matola in Mozambique, were taken into custody after investigations linked them to the fatal stabbing of the deceased outside a local drinking spot in Ngoleni.

Police said the killing occurred on the night of 25 December after the suspects, who are said to be part of a construction team working on a local project in the area, went out drinking. While at the drinking place, they were joined by the deceased, who reportedly shared alcoholic beverages with them.

Trouble later arose over cigarettes. Information gathered by police indicates that one of the suspects lit a cigarette to share with his friend, but the deceased allegedly grabbed it and smoked it without offering it back. When a second cigarette was lit, the same situation reportedly occurred, leading to a heated confrontation.

The disagreement escalated into a physical altercation outside the drinking spot, where the deceased was stabbed once in the groin with a sharp object. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Members of the Royal Eswatini Police Service were alerted and attended the scene. The two suspects were subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the murder as investigations continue.
