Luphandzene footbridge handed over to Mkhitsini community

Mkhitsini – The new Luphandzene Suspension Footbridge was officially handed over to residents of Mkhitsini on Thursday following a ceremony led by the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development through the Microprojects Programme in partnership with Engineers in Action. The project was launched to restore safe access for over three thousand community members who were cut off earlier this year when floods washed away their only crossing point.

The inauguration took place on 11 December and drew local leaders, engineers and community members who had worked together throughout the project. Engineers in Action Programme Manager Ana Jovanovic said the construction process demanded persistence as the team navigated unstable ground, difficult weather conditions and extended timelines. She noted that collaboration between engineers and residents helped keep the project on track despite the challenges.

The involvement of community volunteers and careful coordination with Heyshope Dam management supported safe working conditions while the bridge was being built. The construction took longer than the usual ten week schedule due to harsh conditions that required continuous adjustments.

Regional Administrator Themba N Masuku and Member of Parliament Bhekithemba Bhembe attended the handover ceremony where they spoke about the importance of reconnecting the area and improving daily movement for families, schoolchildren and workers. Micro Projects Director Sibusiso Mbingo said the bridge was designed and constructed under the leadership of Emaswati engineers and described it as an example of the country’s growing technical expertise.

The Microprojects Programme and Engineers in Action confirmed that as they conclude the 2025 build season, preparations are underway for eight new bridges and two water system projects scheduled for next year.
