Gaborone – China has removed import taxes on qualifying products from Botswana with effect from 1 May 2026, opening one of the world’s biggest markets to businesses in the region at no extra cost.

Botswana’s Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship announced the development on Tuesday, saying the zero-tariff arrangement creates a direct opportunity for manufacturers, farmers and entrepreneurs to grow exports and create jobs.

The ministry identified beef and livestock products, processed food and horticulture products, leather and textile products, as well as arts and crafts as the prime sectors positioned to benefit immediately from the arrangement.

The Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) has already activated customs procedures to support the rollout. The revenue authority is adapting its systems to fast-track documentation, clear export paths and issue Rules of Origin certification required for all cargo destined for China.

Companies wishing to export under the preferential tariff arrangement must first register their products with BURS for compliance checks on rules of origin. Businesses can reach the BURS Rules of Origin Desk on 363 9616/17/18 or 363 9916, or walk into the nearest BURS regional office for registration details and technical guidance.
