Mbabane – Eswatini Railways has confirmed it is taking decisive action against fuel theft incidents that have surfaced in recent court proceedings and internal disciplinary cases within the organisation.
The state-owned rail operator said it has been working with specialists and national authorities in line with its governance framework, disciplinary procedures, and the laws of the Kingdom to address the matter.
“Over time, Eswatini Railways has implemented a number of measures to address this matter and has worked closely with specialists and national authorities in accordance with its governance framework, disciplinary procedures, and the laws of the Kingdom of Eswatini,” the organisation said.
Law enforcement agencies have been brought in to investigate the incidents, while the organisation has simultaneously strengthened internal controls and carried out housekeeping measures to plug identified weaknesses.
Several investigations and internal disciplinary processes are ongoing, with some already concluded. A number of cases have been referred to law enforcement, resulting in active court proceedings, while others have already been resolved through the judicial system.
To prevent future occurrences, Eswatini Railways said it has put in place enhanced internal control measures, reinforced its commitment to ethical conduct, and introduced stricter compliance monitoring alongside continuous review of risk management practices. Employee awareness programmes are also underway.
The organisation was keen to separate the actions of those implicated from the broader workforce.
“These incidents do not reflect the values and dedication of the vast majority of its employees, who continue to serve the organisation and the nation with professionalism and integrity,” it said.
Eswatini Railways appealed to members of the public to report any suspicious activity involving its operations by calling 411 7400 or the toll-free line 800 1000, where reports can be made anonymously.
