Mbabane – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy (MNRE), through the Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority (ESERA), has begun the first of a series of stakeholder consultations on draft regulations that will make technical standards mandatory for electrical equipment and electronic products sold in Eswatini.
The proposed regulations aim to strengthen consumer protection by helping ensure that only compliant electrical and electronic products are placed on the market. They will also support improved energy efficiency, provide a legal framework for product approval, compliance monitoring and enforcement, and help keep unsafe and sub standard products out of the country.
The regulations will apply to a range of products, including household electrical appliances, lighting products, refrigerators, air conditioners, electricity meters, solar PV systems, solar water heaters and distribution transformers. 
The consultation held yesterday marked the beginning of a wider engagement process. Further consultations will be held with businesses, industry stakeholders and the public nationwide before the draft regulations are finalised.
The regulations are being developed through a collaborative effort led by MNRE through ESERA, in partnership with the Eswatini Environmental Authority (EEA), Eswatini Revenue Service (ERS), Eswatini Standards Authority (ESWASA) and other key stakeholders.
