MBABANE – Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla has urged emaSwati to prepare for the possible effects of the looming El Niño weather phenomenon by conserving food and protecting grazing land.
El Niño is a natural weather pattern that is often linked to below-normal rainfall and hotter temperatures in southern Africa. It can lead to drought, causing crop failures, water shortages and a shortage of grazing for livestock. It can also affect food production, increase food prices and put pressure on the country’s economy if the dry conditions become severe.
In a video released by the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, Dladla called on the public to stop burning grass, saying it should instead be preserved for livestock as the country prepares for possible drought conditions. She also encouraged citizens to avoid wasting food and to save their produce, noting that the severity of the situation remains unknown. She said it is important for households to prepare early because no one can prevent natural events. 
The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that everyone has a role to play in reducing the impact of El Niño on communities, food security and livelihoods through responsible actions.The call comes as authorities continue to urge the public to take precautionary measures ahead of the expected weather conditions.
