The Civil Society Commission and dealer networks have reported that Mitsubishi has struggled to sell more than 200 units per month, with the highest figure being 205 in July last year. Competition from affordable and tech-focused Chinese brands has eroded its market share, yet the brand remains committed to serving a niche audience rather than chasing mainstream success.

The Destinator, produced in Indonesia, replaces the ASX and Eclipse Cross in Mitsubishi’s local line-up. It is an extended wheelbase version of the Xforce, previously known as the Outlander Sport, with an added third row to seat seven passengers. Its wheelbase has grown by 165mm, and overall length by 290mm, while the rear remains similar to the Outlander Sport but with updated cladding and a silver imitation skidplate.

Two trims are available: GLS and Exceed. The Exceed, showcased at the launch, features a more premium interior, including 12.3-inch infotainment, imitation leather upholstery, an eight-speaker Yamaha sound system, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. Both models support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard features across trims include LED headlights, keyless entry, push-button start, multiple airbags, reverse camera, parking sensors, and advanced driver-assist systems such as Lane Change Assist and Blind Spot Monitoring.

Under the hood, the 1.5-litre turbocharged engine boosts output to 120kW and 250Nm of torque, routed to front wheels through a CVT. Drive modes include Normal, Tarmac, Gravel, Wet, and Mud, with off-road angles allowing for moderate excursions. Fuel consumption is claimed at 7.2L/100km, with a towing capacity of 750kg for braked trailers.

Practicality remains central to the Destinator’s design. The second row folds in a 40:20:40 configuration, and the third row folds 50/50. Access to the third row is easier than in past models, though space is tight for adult passengers. The SUV also includes fold-up trays for the second row and a range of interior storage solutions.

Mitsubishi South Africa has priced the Destinator at R489 990 for the GLS and R569 990 for the Exceed, both covered by a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty and a five-year/75 000km service plan.
The launch route, spanning the outskirts of Johannesburg and the Cradle of Humankind, showcased improved driving dynamics over the Outlander Sport, with the turbocharged engine providing stronger pull despite CVT limitations.

Mitsubishi believes the Destinator will reinforce its reputation for reliable, practical vehicles while appealing to a niche segment in the South African SUV market.
