Matsanjeni – The Eswatini National Trust Commission has completed a mapping exercise to document cultural, historical and natural assets in Matsanjeni North, an area located within the Lubombo Biosphere Reserve, as part of a broader push to develop sustainable tourism in the region.
The exercise was carried out under the EU-Africa Project, supported by the European Union and implemented by the UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa, with the Eswatini National Commission for UNESCO overseeing local coordination.
The mapping effort used a community-driven approach, with residents playing a central role in identifying and documenting heritage resources in their area. The initiative aims to co-create tourism opportunities that reflect local identity, generate income for communities and position Matsanjeni North as a destination of cultural and ecological significance. 
The Lubombo Biosphere Reserve, which straddles parts of Eswatini, South Africa and Mozambique, is already recognised for its biodiversity and natural landscapes. The latest exercise seeks to add a cultural and heritage dimension to the area’s tourism offering, drawing attention to assets that have long been overlooked.
